Mobile Asia Expo 2014: Making Global Connections

The GSMA’s third annual Mobile Asia Expo debuted in Shanghai to a resounding success. In fact, MAE 2014 was the GSMA’s largest-ever mobile industry event in Asia. Both senior-level industry leaders and mobile consumers were treated to a wealth of product and technology showcases, industry learning and networking opportunities, including:

Exhibition

More than 240 companies showcased their goods, games and services at Mobile Asia Expo. With 37,000 sqm of space over three exhibition halls, attendees at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre were able to experience exciting new mobile devices, wearable technologies, mobile applications, back-end solutions, games, accessories and much, much more.

Highlights of the exhibition included:

  • The world’s top companies showing the latest mobile technology: Including Alcatel-Lucent, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Cisco, The Coca-Cola Company, BMW China, Huawei, KT Corp., Lenovo, McAfee, Mozilla, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Paypal, Qualcomm, Rovio, SK Telecom, Sequans, Visa, ZTE and more.   • The Fitbit Challenge: Attendees wearing a Fitbit Flex were able to monitor their daily activity and see the real impact of live data about their activity levels. Prizes were awarded daily to those recording the highest number of steps.
  • The Quest for Area 14: Savvy expo visitors could collect badges around the city and the MAE Expo halls using mobile image recognition technology, and win great prizes.

There were exciting learning opportunities on the show floor in the Innovation Labs and the App Lab. From product demonstrations and strategy sessions to tips on how to ensure your mobile ideas succeed, the labs provided insights and inspiration to all attendees.

Expo attendees were treated several themed exhibit stand zones and pavilions, including the Gaming Zone, the i-Accessories Zone, the App Zone, Start-Up Alley, several country pavilions, and the GSMA Pavilion, which featured news and updates on leading mobile industry initiatives.

The Showcase Stage
New this year was the Showcase Stage on our Expo Floor, which featured device demonstrations, product presentations and a series of Showcase Dialogues – fireside chats featuring key opinion leaders, bloggers and tech entrepreneurs, as well as daily lucky draw activities. Chinese pop singer Jane Zhang appeared to talk about how mobile and social affects her career, and she even treated her fans to some new music!

GSMA Connected City
The GSMA Connected City was arguably the busiest place on the expo floor, where attendees were treated to a city of the future, full of connected technology from

Attendees were entertained by the Crazy Dunkers basketball team, who showcased smart sensing clothing. The shirts allows coaches to monitor their athletes’ vital statistics in order to train harder and safer.

The Mobile Forum

An exciting lineup of speakers from mobile operators, consumer brands, investors, and industries touched by the mobile market presented at nearly 20 conference sessions at the Mobile Forum. Conference sessions focused on current industry topics such as smart services, connected living, mobile retail, mobile media, and monetising LTE.

This year we were pleased to feature Lin Bin, Co-founder and President of Xiaomi, one of China’s largest electronics companies, as our Mobile World Live keynote. The speech was broadcast live over the web on Mobile World Live, and is still available to watch now, by clicking here.

Featured Programmes

Given the size and scope of the mobile industry, Mobile Asia Expo 2013 offered several workshops, seminars and programmes focusing on key industry initiatives and interests. Programmes included the Global Device Summit, Wearable Device Summit, International MVNO Summit, Inside Mobile Summit by McCann, and GMGC China’s Mobile Gaming Summit.

Additional learning opportunities were offered to attendees through professional training programmes. Award Solutions offered sessions focusing on enabling mobile industry executives and companies to get the most out of their mobile strategies and tactics.
