After an 18-month search, Barcelona was selected as the first Mobile World Capital in 2011. The aim of Mobile World Capital, with its headquarters in Barcelona for the next seven years, is to drive and develop innovative mobile initiatives with the capacity to transform the traditional way of doing things, both in industry and in people’s day-to-day lives.
Mobile is changing the world and people’s lives. But the change has just begun. Imagine a city where people move, learn, pay and work in a fully mobile-enabled environment. As a city, Barcelona will become a living lab where the industry will develop innovative technologies and people will experience culture and entertainment in new mobile-enhanced ways.
The Mobile World Capital consists of four primary pillars:
- Mobile World Congress – the mobile industry’s largest annual gathering
- Mobile World Festival – events for the mobile consumer, which spread use and benefits of mobile
- Mobile World Centre – a permanent physical location showcasing the history and future of mobile to the citizens of Barcelona and the world
- Mobile World Hub – a B2B environment pulling together the infrastructures which facilitate mobile
